After You Stop Drinking – How to Rebuild Your Life

How to Stop Drinking and Rebuild Your Life

After you stop drinking you tend to be on overwhelm. You can’t decide how on what to do next, let alone how to go about rebuilding your life. You don’t know what to do first, and at the same time you may be critical of yourself for causing such a mess in the first place, when in truth you should feel good about the fact that you decided to really do something about your drinking. Not an easy thing to do, and remember, alcoholism is a disease.

When you stop drinking, you may find that you have a big void in your life. The nights seem longer. Maybe the days seem longer too. This void comes from where your drinking used to be. Drinking is very time consuming.

You will also now be feeling feelings you haven’t felt in a long time. Drinking helped you chase away all of those feelings you felt were much to big to handle. So now all of a sudden the feelings are there. And they can be really huge.

You may also find you are a little clumsier when you stop drinking. That’s a common side effect and if you break a few things, don’t let it get to you.

The idea of taking it “One day at a time”, regardless of the source is a very good way to handle sobering up.  That’s really the only way to do it when you are first starting. In fact, it’s good advice for anyone, drinker or not, because when you aren’t worrying about the future and dwelling on the past, keeping your focus in today will result in your efforts being that much more effective.

So, where do you start? You start at the beginning.  Address the aspects of your life that are most important to you, and start there. You will probably feel inadequate to the task, but just walk through the fear.  Do the best you can to accomplish at least something towards your future every day. Something is better than nothing, and if nothing else, staying busy will help you keep your mind off of things that dwelling on would only bring you down.

Before you know it, you may be pleasantly surprised at the progress you have made. And that always helps you to feel better about yourself and build up your confidence.

There are days when you may think you will never feel good again, that those days are gone for good, but if you just keep moving forward, your life and outlook will get much, much brighter.

Note: When you stop drinking you are face to face with reality. And it can be tough.  If you have an open mind and are willing to follow those few steps, Max’s method takes most of the suffering out of getting sober and is the easiest way I’ve ever experienced to really stop drinking even when you’re almost sure you can’t. - Samantha J.
