You have things you have to take care of first. If you are not working, you plan to get your work or errands out of the way, and maybe even plan where you are going to buy your next bottle. Chances are there is nothing to drink in the house. You drank that yesterday. So after you get your work done, you reward yourself by pouring that first drink.
If you are at work, you start in on your job responsibilities, and maybe something upsets you or makes you angry. Not that you need any provocation to plan a drinking session. So as the workday wears on, your plan to drink that night begins to crystallize. You will stop at the store on the way home. Not the same store you stopped at yesterday. When you arrive at home that evening with your bottle or case of beer, you will make any phone calls you have to make, so no one will know you are drinking, and pour your first drink maybe during or maybe after the last call.
It is really hard to fight something that is so insidious. Alcohol sneaks up on you. It becomes part of your day without your permission. And it drives you.
This thought process starts long before you are even aware that you are making any plans to drink. It’s like your thoughts are on autopilot, and later you will realize that you have set yourself up for yet another drunk.
