Alcoholism – what is it? What is it to be addicted to alcohol? First, it doesn’t matter what type of alcohol you drink – beer, wine, or liquor. Alcoholism by definition is when you have developed a dependence any drink with an alcohol content. This dependence as anyone with the problem will know, consists of an ongoing overpowering craving for a drink, the inability to stop drinking once you have started, and over time you will notice you are drinking more as far as quantity as your tolerance to alcohol goes up.
Once you have a dependence on alcohol, your preoccupation with your next drink will have you paying less attention to the other activities you used to enjoy in your life. You are dependent on alcohol physically, mentally, and emotionally.
When you have reached the point where you are dependent on alcohol, when you attempt to stop drinking you will have withdrawal symptoms.
Alcohol dependence leads into social, interpersonal, economic and if you drink long enough, eventually medical problems.
There is more proof as time goes on pointing to the fact that alcoholism is a least partially genetic, meaning it is inherited through DNA. Also environment plays a key role in the development of alcohol dependence.
