Depression and Loneliness after a Night of Drinking

Many drinkers are asking about why they feel so depressed and lonely after a night of drinking.

Alcohol is a depressant, so the depression caused by alcohol alone goes with the territory. You are also dehydrated which is known to cause depression, as alcohol dehydrates your body.

And as anyone who has been there knows, there is nothing worse than being left alone the day after the night before when you have a hangover – left alone to your own thoughts, which will tend to be very grim. And this low emotional state can bring on those feelings of loneliness. You may believe that you will never feel good again (but you will in a day or two).  You feel like you are the only person in the world going through this (which when you consider it, is not true since millions of people suffer with alcoholism).

If you pick up another drink to alleviate these symptoms, the drinking and following depression can become an ongoing cycle.
