Intervention for the alcoholic

An intervention is confronting the alcoholic in a group setting with how his or her drinking is affecting the family members and friends, and possibly pointing out to the alcoholic the damage they themselves have sustained as a result of their drinking. The alcoholic should be told by each member of the group willing to participate how the alcoholic’s drinking has affected them, and circumstances overall, in as caring a way as possible.

Usually an intervention is the last resort of the people closest to the alcoholic. Consulting a professional is advisable, for the purpose of the professional attending the intervention or more frequently, to guide the family/friends on how the intervention should be conducted.

The goal of the people wishing to do the intervention is to get their loved one into a treatment program. Most treatment programs require that the alcoholic make the call to make the arrangements for rehab, indicating a genuine interest in getting sober.

The intervention should be handled in a controlled, civil fashion. Behavior should be restrained and the alcoholic should not be demoralized or humiliated.

Even with the effort put forth to persuade the alcoholic to get help by going into a rehabilitation program, there is no guarantee that the alcoholic will comply. There is a certain amount of risk that the intervention will fail, and there will be the resulting feelings of resentment and futility held by the participants.

Alcoholism is a disease and it is a formidable disease. Getting sober may be the most difficult challenge the alcoholic will ever face. Some alcoholics never get sober, and some it will take several attempts before they are successful. In the end, the only person who can actually make the decision to get help is the person suffering from alcoholism.
