So it has come to your attention your drinking is out of control and you have become very concerned about it. You have probably acted out of character under the influence, saying and doing things you would never normally do, and there may have been some incidents that you may be embarrassed about or that have even been devastating.
First, when you realize your drinking is out of control, if you are able to, your ideal move is to stop drinking immediately. Some will be able to achieve this goal. The reason for the necessity to stop immediately is if your drinking is out of control, you are very close to becoming addicted to alcohol.
If you try to stop drinking and are unable to, you have already become addicted, and alcoholism is a chronic condition, meaning if it’s not arrested, it can continue throughout your lifetime.
When you have developed alcoholism (alcohol addiction) the sooner you acknowledge the situation, the sooner you can do something about it. You may hear that acknowledging the problem is 50% of the solution, but that really isn’t true. You will still need to have a true desire to stop drinking (which is difficult when the sick part of you will always want to continue drinking at all costs) and then find the best method for you to succeed at putting that drink down. But first it is critical to admit to yourself that you have a problem, since that is the path that will open you up to any type of recovery.
Then you have your options. You can go to A.A. meetings, use a proven method that will help you get that out of control drinking out of your life, or try rehab.
If you suspect you are addicted to alcohol and are still highly functional, meaning you still have that good job and your personal life is intact, don’t let that fool you. Many will start out on that level, but with continued drinking will slide down the scale to depths they never would have believed possible.
