It is almost never too late to get sober. Once you have gone from alcohol abuse into alcoholism, anyone who’s been there knows this thing has become an addiction.
An addiction is when the substance is running you and your life. You don’t have a choice but to pick up that drink.
When is it too late to get sober? Even when an alcoholic reaches the advanced stages of liver damage, which at that point is not reversible, there is still the possibility of a liver transplant, and liver transplants are performed routinely. However, there are fairly stringent requirements to allow a person with advanced liver damage to become a candidate for a transplant.
The most important thing anyone suffering with alcoholism can do is to stop drinking before the situation becomes facing realities that are almost unbearable. Vital organ damage can be a reality if anyone drinks enough. It is not just the liver. The pancreas, kidneys, heart, many body organs are affected by alcohol. And the amount and duration of drinking alcohol it takes to reach the point where there is damage that has to be dealt with varies by individual. Each person’s system is unique.
